Fragments of a Residency (2017)

Exhibition Press Release

Fragments, pieces, slivers, scraps…

This exhibition is a collection of impressions, doodles, work sketches and paintings inspired by Michele Nigrini’s two month residency at the Cite des Arts in Paris.  The residency offered her a time of research and reflection, as well as the experience of life in a different location and culture.

Paris is an almost overwhelming feast of museums and galleries, buildings, bicycles, graffiti and gardens, flea markets, people and endless sign posts.  Nigrini inhaled these inspirations, and used them to explore different styles, different mediums, different influences, and that which flows from it.

Fragments of a residency reflects the unfolding of that process. Part of the exhibition is an installation of 40 small works which is almost a journal – fragments of everyday life experienced in the residency. These then culminate in paintings of cluttered images that mainly focus on Parisian architecture, fashioned by centuries of living and being. The marriage between line, mark and colour captures a frenetic energy –  the essence of the pace she experienced in Paris.
